“Alex” Makes It to the Big Time!

May 19, 2010 by · 1 Comment · School Library Resources

I’m excited to report that our Alexandria Library Catalogs can now be accessed on the WWW. Yes, we can now search all of our school library catalogs at home. Librarians, I know it will be very tempting to catalog that “one more book” while sitting in the comfort of your own home.  It will also be a wonderful resource for your school community as they ponder what to read next or begin the research process. So clean up those records because all eyes will be watching your catalog! No pressure here…

Sad News

April 2, 2010 by · No Comments · Summer Library Lists

It is with great sadness that I announce that the 2010 Rochester Elementary Schools Summer Library Program has been cancelled due to lack of funding. The program that began in 2005  offered K-5 students the opportunity to meet, share good books and have some summer reading fun. It will be missed!

The Rochester Elementary Schools 2010 Summer Library Program selections have been made. With a program theme like “Make a Splash – Read!”, we couldn’t help but choose books that are “dripping” with adventure and fun for readers of all ages. The complete list can be found on the Summer Picks Page. Go take a peek!

Time Sure Flies!

Happy New Year! I can’t believe how quickly the school year is flying by. I’m pleased to say that the Alexandria Library Automation System is now fully operational and all school library catalogs are searchable from our Intranet. It’s wonderful to be able to search the library catalogs from classroom computers now. Opening access to the Internet will come soon.

Meanwhile, our elementary school librarians are busy applying barcode labels to all holdings and learning how to use the circulation piece to track books electronically, moving away from sign out cards. Our high school and middle school librarians have made a successful transition from Athena to Alexandria. It’s been a lot of work, but well worth the effort! Now it’s on to choosing the 2010 Summer Library Program selections. I believe the theme is “water” related. Stay tuned!

Non-Fiction for Kids

September 23, 2009 by · No Comments · School Library Resources

Since one of our district-wide professional development goals this year is to improve instructional practices in non-fiction writing, I thought I would mention a terrific blog that I just discovered. I.N.K. Interesting NONFICTION for Kids is a blog that shines a spotlight on children’s non-fiction books and their authors. What better way is there to help children learn the art of  non-fiction writing than by immersing them in quality non-fiction literature? So many good books and so little time!

Great News!

September 10, 2009 by · No Comments · School Library Resources

The Rochester School Board approved the purchase of the Alexandria Library Automation System for the whole school district. The school libraries throughout the district will take a giant step into the 21st century, becoming fully automated and interconnected like never before. Since  Alexandria is web-based software, it will allow our libraries to host their catalogs online. Access to our collections from any computer in the school district and from home will enhance the research process for students and allow the library staff to catalog  any time of the day or night.  Yes, we librarians do get carried away sometimes! Just one more book!

Fall Road Trip

August 29, 2009 by · No Comments · Professional Development, School Library Resources

The plans are in motion for my first professional development opportunity of the 2009-2010 school year. A colleague and I will be attending The Thirty-Third Annual Children’s Literature Festival at Keene State College in Keene, NH on Saturday, October 31, 2009.  We’ll make it a great fall road trip by leaving Rochester after school on Friday afternoon and staying the night in Keene. In the morning, with just a short drive to the Keene State campus, we’ll have plenty of time to register & check out the book sales before the excitement begins.

This year’s featured authors are Lita Judge, Beth Krommes, Lois Lowry, Katherine Paterson and Jane Yolen. If you love children’s literature like I do, you’ll know why I’m excited to attend the festival. If you’re interested in joining us, check out all of the details at the Children’s Literature Festival website.
